Can You Use Tesla Home Charger For Other Cars? Solved!

Electric cars have exploded onto the scene in the past decade thanks to innovations by auto companies such as Tesla.

They have churned out several new models, each with its accessories, including home chargers. With other electric car companies though, people are wondering: can you use Tesla home charger for other cars?

Previously, Tesla’s home chargers had only been available to use on other Teslas unless an adaptor was purchased but recently, they have released a charger that works with all-electric cars.

Learn about the different kinds of Tesla home chargers, how to make sure that the charger will work with other electric vehicles, and any special products that are needed.

What Is A Tesla Home Charger?

A Tesla home charger is an accessory that comes with the car and can be added to the wall. It includes a cable and several different power settings. While most people add the charger to their indoor space, the Tesla home charger also works outside.

A note with the Tesla home charger: it must be installed by an electrician because the charger will run electricity from the wall to the car.

If not installed properly there is potential for someone to become electrocuted.

How Do Tesla Home Chargers Work?

The Tesla home charger works the same as charging any electronic, such as a mobile phone.

There’s an outlet that the charger plugs into. You take the actual charger and plug it into the Tesla. It will start to blink green, which means that it’s charging.

Inside the Tesla, there will be a screen that shows how much the Tesla is charged.

Most charging times take about an hour and fifteen minutes to reach full charge. When it’s ready to be unplugged, the light will turn white.

How Do You Use A Tesla Home Charger With Other Cars?

Tesla had originally made their home chargers for Tesla only, which was limiting, especially as other car companies started to come out with their models of electric cars.

There was an adaptor that people could use called the J1772 which would convert the Tesla home charger into a generic charger for all electric cars.

Other options that people had were that some companies started selling generic chargers.

Whether someone has a Tesla or some other electric car, these generic chargers worked for everything.

If you have a Tesla home charger, you need to buy their J1772 adaptor. This piece would attach to the end of the cable and then would be plugged into the non-Tesla car.

What Are The Latest Updates To Tesla’s Home Charger For Other Cars?

One of the latest updates on Tesla’s home chargers is that there is now a charger that does not require an adaptor.

Last year Tesla introduced a home charger that has the J1772 connector. All that has to be done is install the home charger on the wall and any electric vehicle can be charged.

What Are Some Other Charger Options?

The YouTube user, State of Change, looked into a few different electric vehicle charging adaptors and how they worked.

  • J1772 adaptor: This is the general electric car charging option. It’s for Level 1(120 v) and Level 2 (240 v) charging and is good for overnight. It’s also known as the “J-plug.”
  • DC Fast Charging CCS Combo: This is the super high fast charger that works at 400-1000 v. It’s the standard for charging non-Tesla electric cars.
  • DC Fast Charging CHAdeMO: This is also a super high fast charger that works at the same voltage as the CCS Combo. It only applies to Nissan and Mitsubishi.
  • Tesla to J1772 adaptor: This adaptor is used to charge a Tesla vehicle with a non-Tesla charger.
  • Non-Tesla to J1772 adaptor: This adaptor is used to charge a non-Tesla vehicle with a Tesla charger
  • TeslaTap: A high-quality adaptor that does not lock to the Tesla cable. The downside is that it’s easier to steal the adaptor since it can not lock on.
  • TeslaTap MINI: Similar to the regular-sized TeslaTap but it’s smaller and easy to carry around. It also has a mini lock on it.

All of these options offer electric car users a solid option for charging their vehicles. You can watch the full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51JTXo8r0Xc

What Are The Benefits Of Driving A Tesla?

Teslas are popular the world over but there are several reasons to drive one. They are not just a status symbol but have the potential to help fight climate change.

Electric cars don’t produce any dangerous greenhouse gases.

The biggest reason to drive a Tesla or any electric car is that it doesn’t use fossil fuels and doesn’t produce any carbon dioxide, which is a major contributor to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The electric car battery is rechargeable and has a lifespan of up to 35 years, or about half a million miles.

While it takes a lot of materials and labor to create an electric car, it makes up for it on the road thanks to it ability to drive long distances without having to charge.

Save money on gas and mechanic costs.

It’s no secret that gas prices are much higher nowadays. With electric cars people don’t have to buy gas.

There are electricity costs but in the long run, they are much cheaper than having to fill up on gas, and much more efficient.

The long hours at the mechanic are also cut short since the battery and the inner workings are less complicated than a fossil-fueled powered car.

Provide jobs and help the economy.

As demand for electric cars increases, so will demand for labor. The electric car industry needs to hire people to build the cars but it also includes building more charging stations across the country and the creation of other accessories that accompany the cars.

In addition, there are more opportunities to educate the public on how electric cars can fit into the country’s infrastructure and opportunities to hire as more people go to school to learn how the industry works.
