Are Electric Cars Safe in Floods, Car Washes and Lightning?

Short answer: car washes, rain and lightning are all fine. EV high-voltage systems are sealed and independently tested for water ingress. Deep floodwater is dangerous, but it's dangerous in a petrol car too, and the official advice is identical for both: if it's flooded, don't drive through it.

Car washes: completely fine

You can take an EV through any car wash, including the undercarriage jets. High-voltage components typically carry an ingress protection rating of IP66 or better, meaning they're sealed against powerful water jets.

The only practical wrinkle is that some rolling car washes need the car in neutral, and selecting a true neutral varies between EVs. Check the handbook, or use a jet wash or hand wash instead.

Rain, puddles and standing water: fine

Battery packs are sealed units, and manufacturers subject them to rigorous water ingress testing before sale. Driving in heavy rain or through ordinary puddles carries effectively no electrical risk. There's no air intake or exhaust to swallow water either, which is one area where an EV is actually less vulnerable than a petrol car.

Charging in the rain is also safe. The connector and socket are designed for it, and the system runs multiple electronic checks before any current flows.

Lightning: no more risk than any other car

An EV is no more likely to be struck than any other vehicle, and the car's metal body acts as a Faraday cage in the same way, directing current around the occupants and into the ground. Sitting inside during a storm is among the safer places to be.

Floods: the honest answer

This is where nuance matters, so here's the straight version.

Never drive an EV, or any car, through floodwater. The official advice doesn't change by fuel type.

For a car that ends up in deep water:

  • The risk of electrocution is low. High-voltage systems are designed to isolate automatically if they detect a fault, and organisations tracking EV battery incidents have recorded no cases of emergency responders being electrocuted by immersed EVs.
  • The real risk is battery damage. If floodwater breaches the pack, particularly salt water, there's a risk of short circuit and thermal runaway, which can cause a fire. This can happen hours or even days later.
  • Never touch, move or attempt to start a flood-damaged EV. Get a qualified professional to assess it.
  • Petrol cars have their own flood problems, including hydrolocked engines, contaminated fuel and fire risk from leaks. Neither type comes out of a flood well.

Why flood damage matters when buying used

Here's the part that's directly relevant if you're shopping for a used EV.

Flood damage is one of the reasons an EV gets written off, and insurers are relatively quick to write off an electric car after water or underbody damage, because assessing a potentially compromised battery is expensive and they'd rather not take the risk.

That has two consequences for you:

A write-off marker can invalidate the battery warranty entirely. So a Cat S or Cat N car isn't just worth less, it may have lost the protection on its most expensive component.

Flood damage can be hidden. A car that's been through water and repaired can look fine and still have a compromised pack or corroding high-voltage connections.

Both are exactly what a full history check plus a battery health reading are for. This is one of the clearest cases where the two checks together tell you something neither does alone.

What about fire risk generally?

The evidence consistently suggests EVs are less likely to catch fire than petrol and diesel cars, not more. Analyses from several countries, including Sweden and Norway, have found petrol and diesel vehicles substantially more likely to be involved in a fire than EVs, and the proportion of EVs experiencing thermal runaway is very small relative to the tens of millions now on the road.

The honest counterpoint: when an EV battery fire does happen it's harder to extinguish and can reignite, which is why fire services have developed specific procedures. Rarer, but more demanding to deal with.
