Why it matters

Why battery health matters more than mileage

Unlike petrol cars, an EV's biggest hidden cost is battery degradation. A well-maintained 80,000-mile EV can have a healthier battery than a poorly-charged 30,000-mile one. Our report gives you the data sellers won't volunteer.

One report, three trusted sources. The battery and history sections appear on every check; the charging, cost and spec cards are included wherever we hold that data for the car.

What’s included in your reportIncluded

Battery & range reality

Powered by ClearWatt

Estimated battery health

A battery bar showing estimated % range retention versus when new, plus a health grade (like A+) where a manufacturer test record exists.

Expected range now

The miles this specific car should realistically do today, and roughly how far below its when-new range that is.

Range performance (WLTP vs real)

The official manufacturer WLTP range shown side by side with the estimated real-world range now — the honest brochure-versus-reality gap.

Remaining battery warranty

How much of the manufacturer battery warranty is left, in both miles and months, with an Active / Expired badge.

Battery & model

Make, model, variant and year, usable and total battery capacity (kWh), and the WLTP range it was rated for when new.

Charging, cost & spec

Powered by EV Database

Cost per mile on home off-peak, home standard and public rapid charging, with the assumed tariffs shown.

Efficiency & battery chemistry

Where available

Real efficiency (mi/kWh), plus chemistry, thermal management, architecture and the original warranty terms.

Power, 0–62, top speed, Euro NCAP rating, seats, boot and dimensions, and whether it uses a dedicated EV platform.

History & mileage

Provided by the DVSA

MOT history

Every test date, pass or fail, and any advisories or defects logged on the car.

Mileage chart

A mileage timeline built from MOT odometer readings, so clocking and anomalies stand out at a glance.

Powered by ClearWatt. Estimated range is based upon aggregated test data and actual vehicle performance may vary. For more information please consult ClearWatt’s Terms and Conditions. Charging, running cost, efficiency and vehicle-spec figures are powered by EV Database and appear where available. MOT and mileage history is provided by the DVSA.

The data, explained

What each part of the report tells you

Battery health, made visible

Powered by ClearWatt

The battery is the most expensive part of any used EV, and the one thing an ordinary history check can’t show you. We make it visible. Your report opens with an estimated battery-health reading: a bar showing how much of the car’s original range it’s likely to still hold, drawn from aggregated real-world test data across thousands of electric cars of the same type.

Where a manufacturer battery test record exists for the car, we also show a health grade — a letter grade such as A+ — so you can see at a glance whether its condition is normal for its age and model. To be clear about what this is: it’s an estimate and a grade where a record exists, not an OBD-measured State of Health percentage. That honesty is deliberate, and it’s exactly the reading you can’t get from the advert, the V5C or the MOT.

Real-world range now vs when new

Powered by ClearWatt

Brochure range and the range you actually get are two different numbers. Your report gives you the expected real-world range for this specific car today — factoring in its age and the mileage you enter — and sets it against the official WLTP figure it was sold on. The gap between the two is the honest picture of how the battery has aged.

Because range fades with both time and use, feeding in the real mileage is what turns a generic “this model when new” figure into an estimate for this car, now. Every range figure is an estimate, and real-world results still vary with driving style, weather and terrain — we never promise a guaranteed range.

How much battery warranty is left

Powered by ClearWatt

Most manufacturers warranty the battery separately from the rest of the car — typically around 8 years or 100,000 miles — and it’s the safety net that covers the priciest component. Your report shows how much of that battery warranty remains, in both miles and months, with a clear Active or Expired badge.

It’s one of the most valuable numbers in a used-EV negotiation: a car with years of battery cover left is a very different proposition from one that’s just run out, even at the same price.

Charging, running cost and the full spec

Powered by EV Database · where available

Where we hold the data, the report is enriched with the practical detail that decides whether a car fits your life: which connectors it takes and how fast it charges, how long a 10–80% rapid charge takes, and whether it supports vehicle-to-load, home or grid.

It also puts real numbers on ownership — running cost in pence per mile across home off-peak, home standard and public rapid charging, real-world efficiency, battery chemistry, and the full spec, performance and Euro NCAP safety picture. These cards appear where EV Database holds that data for the car; if a service is unavailable, that card is simply left out and the rest of the report is unaffected.

The independent history cross-check

Provided by the DVSA

Battery data tells you about the car’s future; its history tells you whether the seller’s story stands up. The report includes the full official MOT history — every test, pass or fail, and any advisories — plus a mileage chart built from the odometer reading recorded at each test.

That timeline is the independent cross-check: it makes clocking and mileage anomalies obvious, and the mileage itself feeds directly into the battery and range estimate above. Two jobs from one trusted, free source.

The road ahead

The switch to electric is accelerating

Nearly one in four new cars sold in the UK last year was fully electric, and registrations are still climbing. As more EVs reach the used market, buying with confidence means knowing each battery's real condition — not just its mileage.

FAQs

Used EV Check questions

What does the Used EV Check actually include?

Estimated battery health and real-world range now versus when new, an estimated degradation figure, remaining battery warranty and battery capacity, plus charging, running cost, efficiency, spec and safety, and full MOT and mileage history. The charging, cost and spec cards appear where EV Database holds that data for the car.

Do I need the car’s VIN?

No — just the UK number plate and the current mileage. We look everything else up from the registration, and pre-fill the mileage from the latest MOT so you only confirm it.

Is the battery health a measured State of Health?

No. We show an estimated range-retention figure and a battery-health grade where a manufacturer test record exists — not an OBD-measured State of Health percentage. A measured SoH needs a physical test with the car plugged in.

Which cars can I check?

Electric cars we hold data for. We confirm the car is eligible before you pay, so you’re never charged for a car we can’t check. Electric vans aren’t supported yet.

Are the range figures guaranteed?

No. Every range figure is an estimate based on aggregated test data, and real-world results vary with driving style, weather and terrain. We never promise a guaranteed range.

What if you can’t generate my report?

If the battery and range data isn’t available for your car, we don’t produce a report and you’re refunded in full, automatically.
