Warranty status and battery health answer completely different questions. Confusing them costs people money.
What each one actually tells you
Battery warranty tells you who pays if something goes badly wrong, and until when. It's a legal and commercial position, a promise from the manufacturer, bounded by time, mileage and a capacity threshold.
Battery health tells you what you're actually buying. It's a physical measurement of how much capacity the pack has left, which translates directly into how far the car will go on a charge.
One is a safety net. The other is the product.
The gap between them, illustrated
Take a five-year-old EV with 60,000 miles, comfortably inside an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty with a 70% capacity threshold.
Its battery is at 74%.
That car is fully under warranty and has no claim available. It has lost roughly a quarter of its original range. The seller can advertise it, entirely truthfully, as still covered by the manufacturer's battery warranty. The warranty will expire in three years having paid out nothing, because the pack never crossed the threshold.
The buyer who checked only the warranty status thinks they're protected. They're not. They've bought a car with meaningfully reduced range and a safety net that will never catch them.
Why the threshold sits where it does
The 70% benchmark isn't a health standard, it's a commercial one. Manufacturers set it low enough that they'll rarely have to pay out, which is entirely rational from their side. Large-scale data supports the maths: average degradation runs at roughly 2.3% a year, which projects to around 81% capacity after eight years, and UK analysis of thousands of vehicles found older cars retaining a median 85%.
In other words, the threshold is set well below where normal cars end up. It's designed to catch genuine failures, not disappointing-but-ordinary degradation.
That's not a criticism of manufacturers. It just means the warranty was never intended to answer the question buyers are using it to answer.
The inverse case, which matters just as much
The reverse is also true, and it's where real value hides.
An eight-year-old EV with no warranty left but a State of Health of 88% is a better battery than a four-year-old car at 76% with four years of cover remaining. The older car will go further, hold its value better, and is less likely to disappoint. The younger car has a warranty that, on current trajectory, will expire without ever becoming claimable.
Buyers who only look at warranty status systematically overpay for the second car and walk away from the first.
What to do instead
Check both, and read them together:
- Health tells you what you're getting. Compare the State of Health against what's normal for that model at that age, the benchmark varies enormously between, say, an air-cooled early Leaf and a liquid-cooled modern rival.
- Warranty tells you what happens if it's worse than it looks. Remaining months and miles, and how close the current figure sits to the claim threshold.
- The relationship between them is the real signal. A car at 72% with two years of warranty left is worth watching closely. It may yet become claimable, which is genuinely valuable. A car at 72% with the warranty expired is simply a car with a tired battery.
