Why EVs don't need gears
A petrol or diesel engine only makes useful power across a fairly narrow band of revs. Below that band it stalls, above it there's nothing left. A gearbox exists to keep the engine inside that band while the car's speed varies enormously, which is why you end up with five, six or eight ratios.
An electric motor has none of that problem. It produces full torque from a standstill and keeps pulling smoothly all the way to motorway speeds. One fixed reduction ratio covers the whole range, so there's simply nothing for a gearbox to do.
What that means behind the wheel
No gear changes at all. Not the smooth shifts of a good automatic, but genuinely nothing. Acceleration is one continuous surge, which is the thing most people notice on their first EV drive.
No clutch and no manual EVs. You cannot buy a manual electric car, and there's no mechanical reason to want one.
No creep, unless it's simulated. Many EVs add a gentle creep at low speed deliberately, because drivers expect it from an automatic.
One-pedal driving. With strong regenerative braking, lifting off slows the car firmly enough that you can often come to a stop without touching the brake pedal.
Is an electric car an automatic?
For licensing purposes, yes. An EV counts as an automatic in the UK, so if you passed your test in an automatic you can drive one, and if you learn in an EV you'll hold an automatic-only licence.
Mechanically, though, it isn't an automatic gearbox. It's a single-speed reduction gear, which is a much simpler and more reliable piece of engineering. There's no torque converter, no clutch pack and no automatic transmission fluid to service.
The exceptions
A small number of high-performance EVs do use a two-speed gearbox, most notably the Porsche Taycan and the closely related Audi e-tron GT. The second gear is there to preserve efficiency and acceleration at very high speeds, which matters far more on a car built for the autobahn than on a family hatchback.
Some commercial and heavy vehicles also use multi-speed transmissions for similar reasons. For virtually every used EV you'll look at in the UK, though, single-speed is the answer.
Why this matters when buying used
Fewer parts means fewer things to go wrong. There's no clutch to wear out, no gearbox to rebuild, no transmission fluid to change, and no dual-mass flywheel waiting to fail expensively at 80,000 miles.
It's one of the genuine reliability advantages of an EV, and it's part of why servicing costs less. The flip side is that the drivetrain risk that does exist is concentrated almost entirely in the battery, which is exactly why battery health deserves the attention that a gearbox inspection would get on a petrol car.
