The numbers
The average UK EV premium in 2026 sits somewhere around £650 to £710, against roughly £550 to £610 for a petrol equivalent. That's a gap of about 10 to 15%, down from a peak of around 25% in 2024.
But the average conceals enormous variation. Some smaller EVs, a Nissan Leaf or an MG4 for instance, can now insure at or below the cost of a comparable petrol hatchback. Performance and premium models sit at the other end: a Tesla Model Y can cost close to double a Vauxhall Corsa Electric.
Model choice matters far more than fuel type.
Why EVs cost more to insure
Four things drive it:
Battery repair and replacement cost. The pack is often 30 to 50% of the vehicle's total value. Even minor underbody damage can trigger an expensive inspection, and insurers sometimes write off an EV rather than repair it because assessing a potentially damaged battery is costly and cautious. That drives up average claim values.
Specialist repair requirements. High-voltage work needs trained technicians and approved bodyshops. Industry research from Thatcham has found EV repairs run around 25% costlier and take roughly 14% longer than equivalent petrol repairs, partly because of a shortage of qualified technicians and specialist parts availability.
Higher vehicle values. Insurance groups are largely set by value and performance. EVs have generally cost more to buy than petrol equivalents, which pushes them into higher groups regardless of the technology. As cheaper EVs arrive on the market, this is easing.
Instant torque. Even mainstream EVs accelerate faster than petrol equivalents, and statistically quicker cars are involved in more incidents. A small effect, but a consistent one.
Why the gap is closing
Insurers historically priced uncertainty into EVs. They simply didn't have enough claims history to know what the risk looked like. That data now exists, the repair network has expanded, and battery repair costs have stabilised.
The practical implication: shopping around at renewal is worth more on an EV right now than on almost any other vehicle type, because pricing is still adjusting downwards and providers vary widely in how they've responded.
How to reduce an EV premium
- Compare properly at every renewal. The market is moving faster than auto-renewal quotes reflect.
- Check the model before you buy. Insurance group varies hugely between EVs, and it's worth knowing before you commit rather than after.
- Where you charge can matter. Some insurers factor in whether the car is charged on a driveway or garage versus on-street, since that affects both theft and damage risk.
- Check what's actually covered. Not all policies treat the battery, charging cables and home charging equipment the same way. A cheaper policy that excludes your wallbox or leased battery isn't cheaper.
- Consider the total picture. Even £150 a year more on insurance is comfortably offset by fuel savings of £700 or more for a home-charging driver.
What buying used changes
An older, cheaper EV sits in a lower insurance group, so the premium gap narrows or disappears. But two things are worth checking on a used car specifically:
Write-off history. EVs are written off more readily than petrol cars after battery-area damage, which means Cat S and Cat N markers are relatively more common, and they affect both insurability and value.
Battery ownership. Some early Renault Zoes were sold with leased batteries. Make sure your policy and the lease arrangement are compatible.
