Start with the likelihood, not the price
Battery replacement is rare. Analysis across large tracked EV fleets puts the real-world replacement rate at roughly 2.5%, and those replacements are concentrated heavily in first-generation cars now well over a decade old.
Put another way: around 97 in every 100 EVs never need this. The figure that terrifies people is one they're unlikely ever to pay.
Degradation, on the other hand, is universal. Every EV loses some capacity. But losing capacity gradually and needing a whole new pack are entirely different events, and conflating them is where most of the scaremongering comes from.
Why published costs vary so wildly
You'll find the same car quoted at £5,000 on one site and £16,000 on another. That's not because someone's lying. It's because "replacement cost" can mean several different things:
- A brand-new pack from a main dealer: the highest figure, and the one usually quoted in alarming headlines
- A reconditioned or refurbished pack: often substantially less, and increasingly available for common models
- A module-level repair: frequently a fraction of the cost, and applicable more often than people realise
- A salvage or second-hand pack: the cheapest option, with the usual caveats
Broadly, full pack replacement across the UK market spans roughly £5,000 to £20,000+, driven mainly by pack size. But that range is close to meaningless without knowing which of the above you're actually pricing.
The option most people don't know about
Many battery problems don't need a whole new pack.
An EV battery is made up of modules, which are made up of cells. When a pack develops a fault, it's frequently confined to one or two modules rather than the whole assembly. Specialist repairers can often replace just the affected modules, restoring the pack's function for a fraction of full replacement cost.
The independent EV repair sector has matured considerably, especially for high-volume older models like the Nissan Leaf, where there's now a well-established market in both module repair and reconditioned packs. If you get quoted a five-figure sum by a main dealer, a specialist second opinion is very much worth getting.

Bigger battery, bigger bill. That's the main pattern. A long-range EV costs considerably more to re-pack than a small city car.
When replacement is actually worth it
The honest answer is: sometimes it isn't. On an older, low-value car, a full pack replacement can cost more than the vehicle is worth. That's not unique to EVs, the same is true of a failed engine or gearbox in an old petrol car, but it feels different because the sum is concentrated in one component.
The calculation to run:
- What's the car worth with a healthy pack?
- What's the repair actually quoted at, from a specialist rather than a main dealer?
- Is a module repair viable, rather than full replacement?

What this means when you're buying used
You don't need to fear this cost. You do need to price the risk properly, and that means knowing the pack's condition:
- Strong State of Health for the car's age: very low risk, buy with confidence
- Poor SoH but still within warranty and below threshold: may be a free replacement, genuinely valuable
- Poor SoH, out of warranty, older car: the risk is real, so price accordingly or walk away
That's the whole decision, and it's why a battery health check is worth vastly more than a general reassurance that "EV batteries usually last."
