What Does It Actually Cost to Charge an Electric Car? (UK 2026)

The honest answer is that charging an EV can cost anywhere from about 2p a mile to over 20p a mile, and the difference is almost entirely about where you plug in. Here are the actual numbers.

For comparison, a petrol car typically runs at 15p to 23p per mile.

Read that table again, because it contains the single most important fact about EV ownership: the same energy can cost you nine times more depending on where you get it. Home overnight charging is transformative for running costs. Relying on motorway rapids puts you roughly level with petrol.

Worked example

Take a typical 60kWh family EV, charging from 10% to 80%, which is about 42kWh of energy:

  • Home on an off-peak EV tariff: roughly £3
  • Home on the standard Ofgem cap rate: roughly £10
  • Public rapid charger: roughly £32

Same car, same energy, same amount of range added.

Why public charging costs so much more

It isn't purely profiteering. There are structural reasons:

VAT. Home electricity is charged at 5% VAT. Public charging is charged at 20%. That gap alone is significant, and it's a long-standing complaint from drivers without driveways.

Infrastructure costs. Rapid chargers need substantial grid connections, hardware and maintenance, all of which has to be recovered.

Convenience premium. You're paying for speed and availability when you need them.

Prices vary considerably between networks, from around 57p up to 89p per kWh on rapid chargers. Subscriptions and network memberships typically bring that down by 10% to 20%, which is worth having if you regularly use the same network.

The driveway divide

This is the part most EV guides skate over, so let's be direct about it.

If you have off-street parking and can fit a wallbox, an EV is dramatically cheaper to run than a petrol car. Annual savings of £700 to £1,200 are realistic, and for high-mileage drivers considerably more.

If you have no driveway and depend on public charging, the fuel saving largely disappears. An EV may still make sense for you on other grounds, including the driving experience, lower servicing costs, company car tax if applicable, and local air quality. But anyone telling you it'll definitely be cheaper to run without home charging is not being straight with you.

Some middle grounds worth knowing about: workplace charging, often free or cheap and not a taxable benefit when provided by an employer; slower on-street and destination charging at around 54p rather than 76p; and lamp-post charging schemes in some urban areas.

How to charge more cheaply

Get an EV tariff. The single biggest saving available. Off-peak rates of 7p to 10p per kWh are less than a third of the standard cap rate. Most EVs and smart chargers can schedule charging automatically for the cheap window, so you plug in when you get home and the car waits.

Charge to 80% on rapids, not 100%. Charging slows dramatically above 80%, so you're paying premium rates for the slowest, least efficient part of the session. Move on and you'll usually save both time and money.

Use subscriptions if you rapid charge regularly. A monthly fee can bring rapid rates down substantially.

Prefer slower public chargers where time allows. Supermarket and destination chargers at around 54p are meaningfully cheaper than motorway rapids at 76p or more.

Precondition while plugged in. Heating the cabin and battery on mains power rather than from the pack saves range, which matters most in winter.

The battery health angle

There's a cost here that doesn't show up on any tariff comparison.

Heavy reliance on DC rapid charging accelerates battery degradation over years, and battery State of Health is now the dominant factor in what a used EV sells for. So a driver who rapid charges daily pays twice: more per kWh now, and more in lost resale value later.

That doesn't mean avoiding rapid chargers. They exist to be used, occasional use is entirely normal, and it won't affect your warranty. But if you have the choice between slow and fast on a regular basis, slow is cheaper in both senses. See fast charging versus slow charging.
