Why EVs Wear Through Tyres Faster (And What To Do About It)

Tyres are the one running cost where electric cars are consistently worse than petrol equivalents, and it's the cost most EV guides quietly skip over. It's worth understanding properly, because for higher mileage drivers it eats a real chunk of the servicing saving.

How much faster, honestly

Most studies and tyre manufacturers put EV tyre wear at roughly 20% to 30% faster than equivalent tyres on a petrol or diesel car. Some analyses put the range a little wider, at 15% to 30%, depending on the model.

In practical mileage terms, that tends to look like:

UK fleet data tells a similar story from a different angle. One analysis found EV tyres lasting around 6,350 miles fewer than petrol and diesel equivalents, and costing meaningfully more to replace.

It's worth adding a note of caution here, though. Fleet EV samples skew towards larger, heavier vehicles, because that's what was available first. And the RAC has fairly pointed out that modern EVs aren't always much heavier than modern petrol SUVs. So treat the headline gap as real but not universal, and expect a small city EV to behave very differently to a large electric SUV.

Why it happens

Three things, working together.

Weight. EVs typically weigh 15% to 25% more than a comparable petrol car, thanks to the battery pack. That extra mass presses the tyre into the road harder on every mile, and there's no way around it.

Instant torque. An electric motor delivers full torque from a standstill, with none of the gradual build-up a petrol engine has. Every brisk pull away scrubs off a little more rubber than the equivalent petrol car would. This is the factor most within your control.

The tyres themselves. EV-specific tyres are designed around low rolling resistance for range, and low noise because there's no engine to mask road roar. Both goals tend to favour softer compounds and different construction, which trade some longevity for efficiency and refinement. In other words, part of the faster wear is deliberate design, not a fault.

There's a fourth factor that's less about wear and more about damage: roadside assistance data suggests EVs run into tyre problems roughly twice as often as petrol cars, largely because the extra weight makes pothole impacts more punishing.

The uneven wear problem

Regenerative braking is brilliant for your brake pads, which is why EV pads routinely last 60,000 to 80,000 miles. But the slowing force has to go through the tyres instead, and it's applied through the driven axle rather than all four corners.

That means wear is often lopsided. Rear-wheel-drive EVs tend to chew through rear tyres first, front-wheel-drive EVs the fronts. If you don't rotate them, you can end up replacing two tyres well before the others are anywhere near worn out, which is an expensive way to do it.

What it costs

Expect roughly £80 to £150 per tyre for common EV sizes, though larger wheels push well past that. Fleet analysis has put the average EV replacement tyre at around £207 against £130 for petrol and diesel, partly because EVs tend to run larger diameters.

Over five years and a couple of sets, that difference is enough to offset a good portion of the servicing saving EVs enjoy elsewhere. It doesn't cancel it out, but any running cost comparison that ignores tyres is flattering the EV.

How to make them last longer

Most of this is ordinary good practice, but it matters more on an EV:

Check pressures monthly. Because EVs are heavy, running even a few PSI low accelerates wear noticeably and costs you range at the same time. This is the single highest-value habit on the list.

Rotate on schedule. Given how lopsided EV wear tends to be, rotation matters more here than on a petrol car. Some manufacturers recommend intervals as short as every 6,000 miles or so, which is more often than most drivers are used to.

Ease off the launches. Instant torque is the fun part of driving an EV and also the expensive part. Smooth acceleration is the difference between the top and bottom of those mileage ranges.

Keep the alignment right. Heavy cars punish misalignment quickly, and UK potholes knock alignment out more often than people realise.

Fit tyres designed for EVs. Most major manufacturers now offer EV-specific ranges. They're built for the loads and torque involved, and while they aren't automatically longer lasting, they're a better match than a random budget tyre.

Be wary of very cheap tyres. Budget tyres often last 10,000 to 20,000 miles even on a petrol car, and lose wet grip faster as they wear. On a heavy, torquey EV the saving usually evaporates.

What to check when buying used

Tyres are one of the quickest reads on how a used EV has been treated:

  • Uneven wear across an axle suggests alignment problems or missed rotations
  • Two nearly new tyres and two worn ones points to a car that's never been rotated
  • Heavily worn driven-axle tyres on low mileage suggests an enthusiastic previous owner, which is also worth bearing in mind when you look at the battery health figure
  • Mismatched brands or a budget set on an otherwise well kept car can indicate corners being cut on maintenance

A set of four premium tyres is a meaningful cost, so factor it into what you offer if they're close to the limit. The legal minimum tread is 1.6mm, but most safety bodies recommend replacing at 3mm.
