Nissan Leaf vs Renault Zoe: Which Used EV Should You Buy?

These two are the entry point to EV ownership for most UK buyers, and they're the two most likely to appear in a search for a cheap used electric car. They're also both cars with specific quirks that catch people out. Here's the honest comparison.

The Zoe's safety problem

This deserves to come first, because it's the single most important thing most buyers don't know.

In late 2021, Euro NCAP tested the facelifted Zoe and awarded it zero stars, only the third car ever to receive that rating. The original 2013 Zoe had scored five stars under the standards of the time.

The cause wasn't just tougher testing. Renault had replaced the seat-mounted airbag that protected both head and thorax with a thorax-only version, meaning occupants lost head protection in side impacts. In the side pole test the driver dummy's head struck the intruding pole directly. Frontal offset protection was rated poor, and the Safety Assist score came in at 14%, well below average for that year, with autonomous emergency braking and lane assist optional rather than standard.

Renault's response was that the car complies with all regulatory standards and that testing protocols had tightened since 2013. Both true. But if you're buying a car for a family, or for a new driver, this is information you should have before you decide rather than after.

The Leaf, by contrast, scored five stars when the second generation was tested.

The Leaf's charging problem

The Leaf's issue is slower burning but real.

Every Leaf generation uses CHAdeMO for DC rapid charging, and CHAdeMO has lost the standards battle in Europe. New rapid chargers go in as CCS, and existing CHAdeMO units are gradually being retired rather than replaced.

Practically, that means:

  • Home and destination charging over Type 2 is completely unaffected
  • The rapid charging network available for long journeys is shrinking year by year
  • It's a drag on long-term resale value that sellers rarely mention

If you're charging at home and driving locally, this barely matters. If you're planning regular long trips on public rapids, it matters a lot, and it will matter more each year.

Later Zoes use CCS, which is the future-proof standard. But watch out for early Zoes, some of which had no DC rapid charging capability at all, relying entirely on AC charging. Check the specific car.

Battery health: what to look for on each

Nissan Leaf. Passive air cooling rather than liquid means more exposure to heat-related degradation, and early 24kWh cars from 2011 to 2015 show the widest spread of outcomes. The dashboard uses a 12-bar gauge rather than a percentage, which is coarse enough that two cars showing the same bar count can differ by several percentage points underneath. Get a precise reading rather than counting bars.

Renault Zoe. Later cars have better thermal management, but the bigger issue is ownership. Many early Zoes were sold with the battery on a lease, separate from the car, carrying an ongoing monthly cost that transfers with the vehicle. This is the single most important thing to establish on any older Zoe, because it changes the running cost calculation entirely and affects what the car is worth.

Both cars need the battery checked individually rather than assumed from age and mileage. That's true of any EV, but more so on these two given the spread.

Which is better for what

Choose the Leaf if: you want more space and practicality, you're charging at home, you want the stronger safety rating, or you want the larger independent and reconditioned battery support network that comes with being the UK's most common used EV.

Choose the Zoe if: you want the best range for the money on later cars, you're mostly doing urban and shorter journeys, you want a smaller car for city parking, and you've confirmed the battery is owned rather than leased.

Consider neither if: you regularly carry family in the back and are uncomfortable with the Zoe's safety rating, and you need reliable long-distance rapid charging which rules out the Leaf's CHAdeMO over time. In that case a slightly newer CCS-equipped alternative may serve you better.

The checks that matter on both

  1. Estimated State of Health, benchmarked against what's normal for that model and age
  2. Battery ownership on the Zoe, owned or leased
  3. Rapid charging standard on the Leaf, and whether that suits your journeys
  4. Remaining battery warranty in months and miles
  5. MOT and mileage history
  6. Finance and write-off markers

Frequently asked questions

Is the Renault Zoe safe?+
The 2021 facelift model received a zero-star Euro NCAP rating, largely because of a downgraded side airbag and limited standard driver assistance. It meets all legal safety requirements, but it performed poorly against current test standards.
Is the Nissan Leaf's CHAdeMO charging a problem?+
Increasingly, for long journeys. Home and destination charging is unaffected, but the rapid charging network for CHAdeMO cars is shrinking as CCS becomes standard.
