Tesla Model 3 vs Model Y: Which Used Tesla Should You Buy?

The Model 3 and Model Y share the great majority of their components, so this isn't a comparison of two different cars so much as two body styles built on the same underpinnings. The decision comes down to what you need from the shape.

The core trade-off

The Model 3 is more efficient. It's lower and slicker through the air, so for the same battery it goes further and costs less per mile. On motorway journeys, where aerodynamic drag dominates, the gap is at its widest.

The Model Y is more practical. A taller body, a hatchback tailgate rather than a saloon boot opening, more rear headroom and a higher driving position. For anyone regularly carrying bulky items, pushchairs or dogs, the tailgate alone settles it.

That's genuinely the main decision. Everything else is close.

Range in practice

The headline figures favour the Model 3, and real-world driving widens that gap slightly because the Model Y's larger frontal area costs more at speed.

But bear in mind these are broad ranges across versions. A Long Range Model Y will comfortably out-range a Standard Range Model 3. Compare specific variants rather than models.

Battery and charging

Both use CCS for rapid charging in the UK and have Supercharger network access, which remains one of the stronger reasons to buy a Tesla at all.

Check which battery chemistry the car has. Standard Range versions typically use LFP cells, which tolerate being charged to 100% regularly and are often recommended to be, for cell balancing. Longer range versions typically use NMC, which prefer a moderate daily charge band. This changes how you should look after the car, so it's worth establishing.

Tesla's over-the-air software updates are a genuine advantage for used buyers, since an older car can gain features and improvements without a garage visit. It's part of why both models lead the UK residual value tables at around 12% annual depreciation.

What to check on a used example

Battery State of Health. As with any EV, the figure that matters most. Tesla's own displays give an approximation rather than a precise diagnostic reading.

Which refresh it is. Both models received significant updates during their production runs, and there are meaningful differences in interior, ride and equipment between earlier and later cars. Establish exactly what you're looking at.

Whether it's ex-fleet or ex-rental. Common on both, and these cars often lived on Superchargers, which tends to show in the battery figure.

Panel gaps and paint. Early build quality was variable, and it's worth a careful look.

Remaining battery warranty. Tesla's cover runs to 8 years with mileage limits that vary by model, so check the specific car.

Tyres. Both are heavy and quick, and both get through tyres. Uneven rear wear is common on rear-driven versions.

Which should you buy?

Model 3 if: you want the best efficiency and range for the money, you do a lot of motorway miles, you don't need a tailgate, and you prefer the lower driving position.

Model Y if: you need the practicality, you carry bulky things or children regularly, you want the higher seating position, and you'll accept slightly higher running costs for it.

Either if: you want strong residual values, Supercharger access and continued software support. On those measures they're closely matched and both do well.
