What Happens If an Electric Car Runs Out of Charge?

Short answer: an EV doesn't suddenly switch off. It warns you repeatedly, then progressively limits power to stretch the last few miles, and only then comes to a stop. If it does stop, it needs recovery on a flatbed rather than a conventional tow.

What actually happens as the battery empties

Modern EVs are designed to make running out genuinely difficult:

  1. Dashboard warnings start well before you're in trouble, usually with a prompt to navigate to the nearest charger.
  2. Range countdown and audible alerts get more insistent as you get lower.
  3. Reduced power mode, sometimes called limp mode or turtle mode, limits acceleration and top speed to conserve what's left and give you the best chance of reaching a charger.
  4. A hidden buffer. Most EVs keep a small reserve below the displayed 0%, partly to protect the battery from deep discharge. It's usually a few miles at most, and it isn't something to rely on.
  5. The car stops. Steering and brakes still work, but they'll be heavier without assistance, exactly as in a petrol car that's run dry.

What to do if you do stop

  • Pull over somewhere safe, ideally off the carriageway, as soon as you notice power dropping
  • Hazard lights on, and a warning triangle at a safe distance if you have one and it's safe to place
  • Switch the car off to avoid draining the 12V system
  • Call your breakdown provider and tell them explicitly that it's an electric vehicle

That last point matters. Recovery for an EV is different, and the provider needs to send the right vehicle.

The important bit: never tow an EV on its wheels

This is the thing most people don't know, and it's expensive to get wrong.

On most EVs the motor is permanently connected to the driven wheels, and there's no neutral in the conventional sense. If the wheels turn while the car is off, they spin the motor, which generates electricity and can seriously damage the drivetrain and electrical systems.

So a conventional rope or tow-bar recovery, with wheels on the road, risks a very costly repair. EVs are normally recovered on a flatbed, or with all four wheels lifted clear of the ground.

There are exceptions. Some EVs have a specific tow mode, and some front-wheel-drive models such as the Nissan Leaf can be moved with the driven wheels raised on a dolly. Always check the handbook rather than assuming, and let the recovery operator make the call.

Mobile charging is increasingly an option

The recovery industry has adapted. Several UK providers now carry mobile charging units that can put enough energy in to reach a proper charger, which avoids a tow altogether. The RAC's EV Boost, for example, offers a short top-up from patrol vans.

Availability varies by provider and area, so it's worth checking what your breakdown cover actually includes before you need it.

Does running flat damage the battery?

Occasionally running to empty won't ruin a pack, but it isn't good for it. Lithium-ion batteries dislike sitting at very low charge, and leaving a car flat for a long period is genuinely harmful. Recharge reasonably promptly, and treat it as something to avoid rather than a routine event.

Worth knowing when buying used: a car that's been repeatedly run to empty or left sitting flat may show worse battery health than its age and mileage suggest. That's one of the things a State of Health reading picks up that a service history won't.

How likely is this, really?

Uncommon. Multiple warnings, better range, and a much denser charging network mean most drivers adapt quickly. Breakdown organisations do still attend flat EVs, but the numbers are small relative to the number of EVs on the road, and unfamiliarity with the technology tends to be the common thread rather than any flaw in the cars.
