What genuinely voids or excludes cover
Physical damage from a collision. Accident damage to the battery pack is an insurance matter, not a warranty one. The same applies to underbody impacts.
Flood or water damage. Submersion is almost universally excluded.
Unauthorised modification of the battery or high-voltage system. Opening the pack housing, fitting a third-party battery management system, aftermarket cooling modifications, or any attempt to alter the pack will typically void the cover outright.
Unauthorised software or firmware changes. Third-party performance unlocks and modified BMS firmware are a fast route to a denied claim, and some manufacturers monitor for this actively.
Non-approved repairs. Work on the high-voltage system carried out by someone unqualified, or using non-approved parts, will usually invalidate cover.
Insurance write-off status. A vehicle recorded as salvage or written off can lose its warranty entirely. This is one of the reasons a write-off marker matters so much more on an EV than on a petrol car.
Export from the covered territory. Warranties are territory-limited, so an imported car may not carry the cover you'd expect.
Ignoring the service schedule. EVs need less maintenance, but they still need some. Failing to follow the manufacturer's schedule can be grounds for denial.
Commercial or rideshare use. Some manufacturers explicitly exclude private-hire and rideshare mileage. Worth checking if you're buying an ex-taxi EV, and worth being aware of if you plan to use the car that way yourself.
Ignoring explicit warnings. If the car has been telling you about a battery temperature or fault condition and it's been ignored, that can be cited.
What does not void your warranty
This is the part most owners get wrong:
Normal DC rapid charging. Using public rapid chargers is expected use, not abuse. It may age the pack slightly faster over the long run, but on its own it is not grounds to cancel a battery warranty. Manufacturers build cars to be rapid-charged.
Occasionally charging to 100%. The standard advice to keep daily charging in the 20 to 80% band is about maximising battery longevity, not about warranty compliance. Charging fully before a long trip is normal, expected behaviour.
Using a third-party home charger. As long as it's properly certified, correctly installed and unmodified, manufacturers rarely object. Problems arise from unsafe installations, not from the badge on the unit.
Servicing at an independent garage. Using a qualified independent rather than a main dealer generally doesn't void cover, provided the technician holds the appropriate high-voltage qualifications, uses approved parts, and the work is properly documented. Keep the records.
Degradation that's disappointing but above the threshold. If your battery is at 74% and the warranty trigger is 70%, that isn't a voided warranty. It's simply not yet a claim. Frustrating, but a different thing entirely.
The threshold trap worth understanding
That last point deserves expanding, because it's where the warranty's real limits show. Capacity warranties only pay out if the pack falls below the stated threshold within both the time and mileage limits. A car that degrades to 72% by year seven has lost nearly a third of its range and has no claim available.
That's precisely why knowing a used EV's actual State of Health matters more than knowing it's technically still in warranty. "Under warranty" and "healthy" are not the same statement.
How to protect your cover
- Keep every service record, including any independent work on the high-voltage system
- Follow the manufacturer's service schedule
- Don't let the pack sit at very low charge for extended periods
- Use the recommended daily charging range where practical, and rapid-charge when you need to without worrying about it
- Keep the car out of sustained extreme heat where you can
- Document the battery's condition periodically, so you have evidence if you ever need to make a claim
