Battery health is now the dominant pricing factor
Market analysis in 2026 identifies State of Health as the single biggest determinant of a used EV's final sale price, more influential than mileage or age in many cases.
That's a genuine break with how the used car market has always worked, and it makes sense once you think about what an EV actually is. On a petrol car, mileage is a reasonable proxy for cumulative wear across hundreds of moving parts. On an EV, the expensive part is the battery, and battery wear correlates much more weakly with miles driven than it does with how the car was charged, and where it spent its life.
A carefully-charged 80,000-mile EV can have a healthier pack than a hard-rapid-charged 40,000-mile one. Buyers have worked this out. The market is pricing accordingly.
Why this changed
Three things happened at once.
Battery reporting got better. For years, buyers couldn't establish a used EV's battery condition, so they discounted every used EV to account for the uncertainty. That suppressed prices across the board. Now that condition is measurable, the discount is being applied selectively, to cars that deserve it, rather than universally.
Supply grew sharply. More than 274,000 used battery electric cars changed hands in the UK during 2025, up nearly 46% year-on-year. With more choice, buyers can afford to be selective, and selective buyers compare on the thing that matters.
The first adoption wave aged. Cars from 2016 to 2019 are now old enough that the spread in battery condition between individual examples has become large and obvious.
What this means if you're selling
Your car's battery health is worth money, and most sellers are giving it away for free by not mentioning it.
Get a documented battery health report. Evidence beats assertion. A buyer who can see a State of Health figure doesn't need to price in uncertainty, which means they don't need to discount your car for risk that isn't there. Dealers who provide battery health reporting have a measurable advantage in the market for exactly this reason.
State the remaining battery warranty explicitly. Cars still inside their battery cover are easier to sell and typically fetch more than otherwise identical out-of-warranty examples. Almost no private adverts mention it.
Keep a history, not just a snapshot. A series of battery health readings over time shows a trajectory, which is more reassuring than a single number. If your servicing includes a battery diagnostic, keep the records.
What this means if you're buying
The same shift works in your favour.
A poor SoH is a legitimate negotiating position, and a quantifiable one. "This is at 76% when the model average at this age is 85%" is a far stronger argument than a general sense that the car seems tired.
A strong SoH on an older car is where value hides. Because the market still partly prices on age and mileage out of habit, a well-kept older EV with an excellent pack can be genuinely underpriced.
Out-of-warranty isn't automatically bad. An eight-year-old car at 88% SoH is a better battery than a four-year-old at 76%, regardless of what the paperwork says. See battery warranty vs battery health.
How to protect your battery's value
None of this requires babying the car:
- Charge mainly on slower AC where practical. Use rapid charging when you need it. It's what it's for, but don't make it your default.
- Keep daily charging in a moderate band rather than routinely filling to 100%. Top up fully before long trips without worrying about it.
- Avoid leaving the car at very high or very low charge for extended periods.
- Keep it out of sustained extreme heat where you can, particularly on air-cooled models like the earlier Nissan Leaf.
- Document the health periodically. The record itself becomes an asset at resale.
The habits that preserve battery health are the same ones that preserve resale value. That's the useful thing about this. You're not trading off range today against value tomorrow, you're doing the same thing for both.
