Electric Car Myths, Debunked (With the Actual Data)

Plenty of what people believe about EVs was true in 2015 and isn't now. Some of it was never true. And a few of the criticisms are entirely fair, which is worth saying too, because a page that debunks everything isn't credible.

Battery myths

"EV batteries only last a few years."

False. Most last 8 to 15 years or roughly 150,000 to 200,000 miles before dropping below 80% capacity. Analysis of more than 22,700 vehicles found average degradation of about 2.3% a year, and a UK study of over 8,000 cars found older vehicles retaining a median 85% of capacity.

"You'll definitely need an expensive battery replacement."

False. Across large tracked fleets the replacement rate sits at roughly 2.5%, concentrated heavily in first-generation cars now well over a decade old. Around 97 in 100 EVs never need this.

"There's no way to check a used EV's battery."

False, and this one costs people money. A diagnostic State of Health reading gives a precise figure. The dashboard range estimate isn't the same thing, because it shifts with weather and driving style.

"Rapid charging ruins the battery."

Mostly false. Heavy daily reliance over years does accelerate degradation, but occasional rapid charging is expected use and doesn't void any mainstream warranty. See fast versus slow charging.

"If it's still under warranty the battery must be fine."

False, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in the used market. Capacity warranties only pay out below a threshold, usually 70%. A car at 74% has lost a quarter of its range and has no claim available. See battery warranty versus battery health.

"Cold weather permanently damages the battery."

False. Winter range loss is temporary and fully recovers. Cold actually slows the chemical ageing that causes permanent degradation.

"High mileage means a worn-out battery."

Largely false. Charging habits, thermal management and climate matter more than the odometer. A carefully charged high-mileage car frequently beats a low-mileage one that lived on rapid chargers.

Safety myths

"EVs catch fire more often than petrol cars."

False. Multiple national analyses, including from Sweden and Norway, have found petrol and diesel vehicles substantially more likely to be involved in fires. The fair counterpoint: when an EV battery fire does happen it's harder to extinguish and can reignite, which is why fire services have specific procedures for it.

"You can't take an EV through a car wash."

False. High-voltage components are sealed and tested against powerful water jets, typically rated IP66 or better.

"EVs are dangerous in floods."

Misleading. Deep floodwater is dangerous in any car, and the advice is identical for both. Electrocution risk from an immersed EV is low. The genuine risk is a water-damaged battery catching fire later, which is why you should never touch or move a flooded EV yourself.

"EVs attract lightning."

False. No more likely to be struck than any other car, and the body shell protects occupants in the same way.

Running cost myths

"EVs are always cheaper to run."

Partly true, and it depends entirely on where you charge. Home off-peak charging is transformative at roughly 2p to 3p a mile. Public rapid charging at around 23p a mile is roughly level with petrol. The honest version is that EVs are much cheaper to run if you can charge at home.

"You never have to service an EV."

False. Less servicing, not none. Tyres, brakes, brake fluid, coolant, cabin filter and an annual MOT all still apply. Around £165 a year is typical.

"EVs are cheap to insure because they're safer."

False. Insurance is one area where EVs cost more, typically 10% to 15% above equivalent petrol models, mainly because of battery repair costs and specialist labour.

"EVs still don't pay road tax."

Outdated. The VED exemption ended in April 2025, and cars above £40,000 list price also pay the Expensive Car Supplement.

Practicality myths

"You'll constantly run out of charge."

False. EVs give repeated warnings and progressively limit power before stopping. Running out is uncommon, and the UK now has well over 100,000 public charging devices.

"EVs can't do long journeys."

Outdated. Most modern EVs manage 200 to 300 real-world miles, and rapid charging adds a substantial amount in 20 to 30 minutes. It requires slightly more planning than a petrol car, not a different lifestyle.

"Electric cars are slow."

False, almost comically so. Instant torque means even mainstream EVs out-accelerate equivalent petrol cars from a standstill.

"The grid can't cope."

Overstated. Most charging happens overnight during periods of low demand, which is exactly why off-peak tariffs exist and are so cheap.

The criticisms that are actually fair

A page that debunks everything is propaganda, so here are the ones that stand up:

Public charging is expensive. Around 76p to 79p per kWh on rapids, partly because public charging carries 20% VAT against 5% at home. That's a genuine unfairness for drivers without driveways.

Depreciation has been heavy. Used EV values fell around 10% year on year into 2026. Good news if you're buying, painful if you bought new.

Tyres wear faster and cost more. Weight and instant torque, both unavoidable.

Insurance costs more. Narrowing, but real.

Without home charging the economics are much weaker. Worth stating plainly, because plenty of EV coverage glosses over it.

Battery condition is genuinely opaque. You cannot tell from a test drive, an advert or the mileage. That's a real problem with the used market, and the reason checking exists.

Do EV batteries really only last a few years?+
No. Typically 8 to 15 years or 150,000 to 200,000 miles, and most will outlast the rest of the car.
