What it costs
A typical annual EV service in the UK runs around £165, with most falling somewhere in the £100 to £250 range depending on model, garage and schedule. An equivalent petrol car typically costs £205 to £300 for the same annual service.
So the routine saving is real but modest, perhaps £40 to £80 a year on the service itself. The bigger savings come from what you don't have to fix over time.
Independent EV specialists typically charge 20 to 30% less than main dealers for routine work, and as the number of IMI-qualified EV technicians grows, that option is becoming easier to find across the UK.
What you'll never pay for again
This is where the real money is:
- Oil and filter changes: no engine oil at all
- Spark plugs: nothing to ignite
- Cambelt or timing chain: no timing to maintain
- Exhaust and emissions systems: no exhaust
- Clutch: no gearbox on most EVs
Brakes last far longer too. Regenerative braking slows the car electrically before the friction brakes engage, so pads and discs see much less work. Many EV owners report 60,000 to 80,000 miles between pad replacements, against 30,000 to 40,000 miles on a comparable petrol car.
What an EV service actually covers
Since there's no engine work, the focus shifts:
- Battery health diagnostic and high-voltage system check
- Brake fluid and coolant levels, since EVs still use coolant for battery and motor thermal management
- Tyres, brakes, suspension and steering
- Cabin filter
- Software and firmware updates
- General safety inspection
Most manufacturers recommend servicing every 12 months or every 12,000 to 18,000 miles, though schedules vary, so check the specific model.
The cost that's higher: tyres
EVs are heavier than equivalent petrol cars and deliver instant torque from a standstill. Both accelerate tyre wear, sometimes considerably. Expect £80 to £150 per tyre for common EV sizes, replaced more frequently than you'd be used to.

MOT still applies
EVs need an MOT from three years old, exactly as petrol and diesel cars do. The difference is there's no tailpipe emissions test. Everything else, including brakes, tyres, lights, suspension, steering, seatbelts, visibility and body condition, is assessed identically.
MOT history is also genuinely useful when buying used, because it gives timestamped mileage readings at every test, which is how odometer discrepancies get spotted.
Battery health checks are becoming standard
Increasingly, a battery health diagnostic is part of the routine EV service, and manufacturers like Lexus now make an annual health check a condition of their extended battery warranty.
There's a resale argument here too. A documented history of battery health readings is becoming a genuine selling point, because it lets a buyer see the trajectory rather than a single snapshot. As State of Health becomes the dominant factor in used EV pricing, that record starts to be worth real money.
Does independent servicing void the warranty?
