How EV Maintenance Differs From Petrol or Diesel

The headline is straightforward: an EV has far fewer moving parts, so there's far less to go wrong. But "less maintenance" isn't "no maintenance", and a couple of things actually need closer attention than they would on a petrol car.

What disappears entirely

These simply aren't part of EV ownership:

  • Engine oil and filter changes. No engine, no oil.
  • Spark plugs and ignition components. Nothing to ignite.
  • Cambelt or timing chain. No timing to maintain, which removes one of the largest scheduled bills on a petrol car.
  • Exhaust, catalytic converter, DPF. No exhaust system at all, so no DPF regeneration problems and no catalytic converter theft risk.
  • Clutch and gearbox servicing. A single-speed reduction gear replaces the conventional transmission.
  • Fuel filters, injectors, turbochargers. All gone.
  • Emissions testing at MOT. The MOT still applies from three years old, but there's no tailpipe test.

Collectively that's most of what makes a petrol or diesel car expensive to keep running past 100,000 miles.

What stays the same

  • Brakes, though they last far longer, more on that below
  • Tyres, which need more attention, not less
  • Suspension, steering and shock absorbers
  • Cabin filter
  • Wipers, bulbs, washer fluid
  • 12V battery, which fails at roughly the same rate as in any car
  • Annual MOT from three years old

What needs more attention

Tyres. The big one. EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, so tyres wear roughly 20% to 30% faster and often unevenly across an axle. Regular rotation matters far more here than on a petrol car, and pressures need checking monthly because a heavy car punishes underinflation quickly. See our guide to EV tyre wear.

Brake fluid. EVs still have hydraulic brakes and the fluid still absorbs moisture over time, so it needs changing on schedule. Because regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used so little, this gets overlooked.

Coolant. Many people assume EVs don't have coolant. Most do, used for thermal management of the battery, motor and power electronics. It's a different system to an engine cooling circuit but it still needs checking.

Battery health. The one genuinely new item. Increasingly part of a routine service, and worth having documented for resale.

The brake paradox

Regenerative braking recovers energy by using the motor to slow the car, which means the friction brakes do very little work. EV owners routinely report 60,000 to 80,000 miles between brake pad replacements, against 30,000 to 40,000 on a comparable petrol car.

There's a catch, though. Brakes that are barely used can seize or corrode, particularly in the UK climate and especially on cars that do mostly short urban journeys. Discs can develop surface rust that never gets scrubbed off. It's worth using the brakes properly now and then, and worth a proper inspection at service even though the pads look almost new.

What it costs

Annual servicing typically runs around £165, against roughly £205 to £300 for an equivalent petrol car, and qualified independents generally charge 20% to 30% less than main dealers. Full breakdown in our EV servicing costs guide.

The honest caveat: routine maintenance is cheaper, but specialist repair is not. High-voltage work needs trained technicians and approved equipment, so when something does need fixing, labour rates are higher and repairs can take longer.

Can an independent garage service an EV?

Yes, and it generally won't affect your warranty, provided the technician holds appropriate high-voltage qualifications (IMI Level 3 or above), approved parts are used, and everything is documented. Keep the records. See what voids an EV battery warranty.

What this means when buying used

The shift in where the risk sits is the important part.

On a used petrol car, you're assessing dozens of wear items: engine condition, clutch, cambelt history, turbo, DPF, gearbox. On a used EV, most of those questions vanish, and the risk concentrates almost entirely into one component you can't see or hear.

That's a simpler inspection, but only if you actually check the thing that matters. A test drive tells you a great deal about a petrol car's condition and comparatively little about an EV's battery.
